Name: Alpha Eridani (Achernar) But he prefers just to be referred to as Eridani.
Age: Eridani looks to be somewhere around 17 years old, but his real age is currently unknown. He certainly acts like he is only about 10 though...
Gender: Male
Race: Living Star
Sexual Orientation: Decidedly straight.
Position: Performer in Circus Luminara.
Appearance:
Homeland: A strange realm adjacent to space that acts as a parallel universe and houses the embodiments of stars.
Abilities: Eridani's powers subsist simply on the ability to control and manipulate fire. He's gotten extremely adept at it, to the point of being to create entire miniature armies of soldiers made of fire and stirring them into an enormous battle, complete with weapons and all. This is all thanks to an extreme knowledge and manipulation of the nature of gas atoms and as such, he can also create enormous explosions out of seeming thin air. (Though he's much more likely to avoid that side of his power.) Physically, he is incredibly strange for how slender he is but that strength is usually wasted on heaving circus display sets from one end of the Big Top to another.
Personality: The first thing anyone notices about Eridani is that he is a child in every aspect of the word. Mentally, he is about as mature as a ten year old, though that does not necessarily make him unintelligent. He is naive and altogether too trusting, but what he lacks in maturity he makes up for in personality. Eridani relies heavily on his absolute first impression of someone and it takes a lot to dig that impression out of his psyche. He is bright, childish and at times can wear on someone's nerves but he honestly means well in the end. He takes orders very, very well, respecting authority figures and trusting their word to be iron law. Eridani has a thing for simplicity and he thrives on simple interests like fantasy stories and entertaining small children. He loves puzzle games and small shiny objects like mirrors and he can read into an oblivion if captivated by a book. He's incredibly personable if you happen to make the right first impression (it is very hard not to) and will tell you anything you need to know provided he hasn't been told beforehand to withhold that specific information.
Meanwhile, he can be incredibly dangerous if provoked, though half of the time he is more dangerous to himself then most others. Eridani would rather throw up a wall of fire and bolt then stick around and risk a true fight, but he also acts on instinct which lands him more often in trouble then it does to help him escape. He is not a fighter by any means and in hand to hand combat, he is the obvious loser.
Despite all of his quirks and playful habits, Eridani is not without his demons. The young star is plagued by an utterly crippling phobia of being alone. He can stave it off for a bit if need by distracting himself or holding conversations with himself and can usually hold it off for long periods of time if he has a mirror at hand. (He's simple-minded enough to fool himself into thinking he's having a one-sided conversation with the person on the other side of the mirror. This is also why he sleeps in the circus's Hall of Mirrors.) But if left alone for too long without the proper additions, Eridani will lapse into a tantrum of fear. This attacks can result in anything from a self-induced loss of consciousness to the hurling of small, heavy object and will usually not stop until someone appears to ease his troubled mind or until he passes out.
History: Eridani's life started simply; draped in the lavish lifestyle of a star noble, living in the company of his parents and five siblings. His race, the physical embodiments of stars and celestial bodies, lived on a caste system in which the constellations served much like the humans dukes and lords, all serving under the moon goddess Tsukiyomi. His family, collectively the constellation Eridanus, were thus expected to be a kind of social role model, a mold that Eridani couldn't possibly be expected to fit. He had always been a bit off, but when his phobia emerged and when the first of his fits erupted, his family was horrified. They immediately opted to send him out into the clutches of space. Officially, it was a kind of test, an opportunity and a challenge for the young star to learn more about the world outside of their little niche in the universe. Realistically, his family was just pleased by the idea that he might crash onto some distant planet and be obliterated.
Their prayers were half answered. After being flung into space, the young star crash landed on a life-supporting planet and, though he was wounded, he survived. And more then that, he flourished. Eridani was found by the ringleader of Circus Luminara, Artemis, and his young daughter Rosaline. At the girl's pleading, Artemis took in the strange boy and Rosaline nursed him back to health. As he recovered, Eridani began to take a shine to the young girl working his bedside and to the circus in general. Indebted to the ringleader, Eridani agreed to work as one of the circus hands, loading and unloading the caravan whenever the circus stopped.
As time wore on, Eridani's skill as a performer began to appear. During long breaks, he would dazzle some of the younger workers with elaborate fire displays and in towns he could tempt anyone into paying the circus a visit with just his charm. He was charismatic, genuine and unique and it was just the kind of novelty that Artemis cherished. He approached the boy with an offer; he would stay and perform with the circus for as long as he could and in return he would be given a home and a little bit of income. Eridani's natural penchant for spotlight pressured him into agreeing and with the Circus Luminara he now resides. He has taken to following Rosaline around in all of her endeavors, helping her when he can and learning everything he can possibly coax out of her mind.
